What do we wear? Prepping for your portrait session.

One thing every family has to figure out when they’re going to have their photos taken….. outfits.  I find that a lot of my clients either A. have a hard time figuring out what everyone in the family will wear or B. procrastinate up until the last minute.  Gonna be honest, I fall into that B category all to often myself hahaha

There are a few factors that come into play when it comes to choosing wardrobe.

One is what season is it.  You wouldn’t be outside in your shorty-shorts and playing in the river in the dead of Winter.  You wouldn’t find yourself bundled up in heavy jackets and cute accessories for the cold when it’s 100 degrees in the Summer.  Dress accordingly, or close enough.

Lifestyle in-home portraits are a tad different.  You want to look cozy, but somewhat put-together.  You generally don’t have to worry about being too hot or too cold.

Another factor that comes into play is what you already have vs if you need to purchase anything.  I’m a Mom on a tight budget, so I try to raid the closets before heading to the store.  I’ll find most of what we’re wearing from what we already have handy, that is without stains and holes (yes, non-jeans too!).

Also consider this before diving into your closets; think about where you’ll be displaying your portraits.  Living room?  Hallway?  Bedrooms?  Take a look at those spaces and check out what sort of colors/styles you have going on there.  Style your session so your new ‘art’ matches your space perfectly.

So you can totally see how if you’re stuck on what to wear, just look around your spaces!  Hopefully you don’t decorate with colors you don’t like, which means you also won’t have clothes in your wardrobe that you don’t like!  I can’t say the same for your spouse or your kids though… hahah

If all else fails, plan to display your portraits in black & white.  Nearly everything looks good in black and white 😉
